Etymology
From Illyrian *terg (“market, marketplace”), possibly from a Balkan substrate. Usually assumed to be connected with Proto-Slavic *tъrgъ, Lithuanian tur̃gus, Latvian tirgus, Swedish torg (“market, marketplace”). Compare Romanian târg (“market”). This group is considered to be cognate with the Italian city name of Trieste, Latin Tergeste[1].
