Unclear. Either a compound formation of vë and re or from Proto-Indo-European *u̯er 'to observe, pay attention'. Compare Ancient Greek (Att.) ὤρα (ṓra, “care, attention”), Latin vereor (“worship, fear, dread”), Latvian véru (“see, show, notice”), Old Norse vara (“attentive make, look after; protect, assume'”) Old Saxon waron (“observe, protect, look after, watch over, keep”)[1].
