From Old Swedish vørt,[2] from Old Norse virtr, from Proto-Germanic *wirtiz. Svensk etymologisk ordbok suggests the word is borrowed from Middle Low German.[3] Cognate with Norwegian Bokmål vørter, Norwegian Nynorsk vørter, Danish urt.
