Etymology

From Konkani विंदालू, from Portuguese vin-d’alho (“wine and garlic sauce”), from vinho (“wine”) + alho (“garlic”). Not related to English aloo, from Hindi आलू (ālū), but by confusion with this term the dish is often based on potatoes.
