From Proto-Germanic *wargiþō, equivalent to wearg + -þu, wearh + -þu. From Proto-Germanic *wargaz > *werg, from Proto-Indo-European *werg̑ʰ- (“to choke”). Cognate with Gothic 𐍅𐌰𐍂𐌲𐌹𐌸𐌰 (wargiþa).
