Inherited from Proto-Slavic *jьskati with a prothetic "w", from Proto-Balto-Slavic *īˀskāˀtei, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂i-sḱé-ti, from the root *h₂eys- (to wish, request, search). Compare Czech vískat.
