Etymology

Attested in Byzantine Greek as ζαγάριον (zagárion, hunting dog, setter dog).[1] Modern Greek ζαγάρι (zagári, hunting dog) represents a borrowing from Ottoman Turkish, along with corresponding terms in South Slavic such as Bulgarian and Macedonian загар (zagar, hound), Serbo-Croatian zagar (id). The ultimate origin of the word is not entirely clear.[2]
