A partial calque of Swedish Malmö (literally “Ore Hill”, from Middle Danish Malmhauge), analyzing as ö (island, ey in Icelandic), although here has a different etymology, being derived from Old Norse haugr (Icelandic haugur, Swedish hög), of earlier Proto-Germanic and ultimate Proto-Indo-European origin.
