Etymology

From Hindi पटना (paṭnā), also known as पाटलिपुत्र (pāṭliputra) at one time.

Perhaps from Sanskrit पट्टन (paṭṭana, town), probably from Dravidian.

Alternatively, possibly taken from the Patan Devi, an important temple located in Patna, but this is doubtful.
