Etymology
Borrowed from Albanian Peja, definite nominative of Pejë. From the earlier name Siparantum, first mentioned by Ptolemy in his work Gheographia. Falsely claimed to be derived from peć (“furnace”), the Serbian name for the city, which probably refers to the hermitaries in the caves of nearby Rugova Canyon formerly inhabited by Serbian Orthodox monks.
