Etymology

An Indo-European loanword, either from Proto-Germanic *nabō, or from Baltic (compare Latvian naba); in either case from Proto-Indo-European *h₃nobʰeh₂ (“navel, hub”). EES suggests that loaning from Baltic is more likely in light of many other basic Finnic body part terms being derived from the same direction (e.g. *hambas, *kakla, *raici).
