From Proto-Finno-Ugric *särke. Cognates include Erzya сэрьге (serʹge, roach), Moksha сярьге (sjarʹge, roach), Eastern Mari шеренге (šerenge, roach), perhaps also Mansi та̄рка (tārka, ruffe), Khanty лӓрәг (lärəg), лӓр (lär, ruffe).
