Etymology
Uncertain; presumably from Proto-Indo-European *mék-s ~ *m̥k-és, from Proto-Indo-European *mek-, possibly of substrate origin. Perhaps cognate with Lithuanian mãkatas (“midge”), if not itself borrowed from Iranian.
