Causative-iterative of *činǫti (to probe, to gauge) + *-iti (cognate with Ancient Greek τῐ́νω (tínō, to pay honor)) and/or related noun *činъ (rank, status) + *-iti, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *kʷey- (to enquire, to evaluate) < *kʷ- (interrogative particle).
