Proto-Slavic

Etymology

Often derived from Proto-Indo-European *gʰewro- and thus cognate with Sanskrit घोर (ghorá, terrible, terrifying), Gothic 𐌲𐌰𐌿𐍂𐍃 (gaurs, sad), 𐌲𐌰𐌿𐍂𐌾𐌰𐌽 (gaurjan), Old High German gōrag, Old Irish gúrе.

An alternative possibility is derivation from Proto-Indo-European *ǵewH- "force, drive" cognate with Sanskrit जु (ju, drive, impel, hurry), Persian زود (zud, quick, rapid) and perhaps Old Norse keyra (drive).
