Etymology

From *deběti (to pray upon in stealth) + *-nǫti. Akin to dial. Serbo-Croatian дѐпсти (to await for ambush) and possibly dial. Russian дёб (djob, edge, end).

Probably from Proto-Indo-European *dʰebʰ- (to deceive, to humble), presumably cognate with Sanskrit दभ्नोति (dabhnoti, to damage).
