Etymology

A nursery word. Inherited from Proto-Balto-Slavic *mā́ˀmāˀ, from Proto-Indo-European *méh₂-méh₂, a reduplication of *méh₂- < *méh₂tēr (mother). Cognate with Lithuanian mamà, dialectal momà, Latvian mama.
