Etymology

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *walīˀtei, from Proto-Indo-European *wolh₁-éye-ti, causative of *welh₁- (to choose, want). Synchronically equivalent to *voľa (will) + *-iti. Cognate to Proto-Germanic *waljaną (to will), Sanskrit वरयति (varáyati, to choose).
