allas
Finnish
Etymology
From Proto-Finnic *aldas, a Germanic loan from Proto-Germanic *aldǭ (“trough”) (whence e.g. Norwegian olda). The ending has probably been modified to -as by analogy with other Germanic loans (such as valas). Karelian allaš (“trough”) is of the same origin. Doublet with aalto.
