First attested in the 1890s in the form ’t is of een engeltje op je tong piest, with een often being replaced by ’n. First used partially in a 1893 story by Jacobus van Looy, who omits piest,[1] then used in full in a 1897 story by Herman Heijermans.[2] Literally, “as if a little angel [e.g. a putto] pees on your tongue”.
