Etymology

From Old Spanish bienvenido, corresponding to bien (well) + venido (come), from the past participle of venir (to come). Presumably a calque of a Gothic term, from Proto-Germanic *wiljakwumô (a welcome guest or arrival), from which many modern Germanic forms descend, as English welcome.
