From Iberian Vulgar Latin *broccius, from Proto-Celtic *wroikos (see also Welsh grug, Old Irish froech, Irish fraoch), probably from an unknown non-Indo-European source (compare Czech vřes from Proto-Slavic *versъ, Latvian vìrsis, Ancient Greek ἐρείκη (ereíkē)).
