Inherited from Proto-Slavic *budìti, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *báudīˀtei, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰowdʰéyeti, causative of *bʰewdʰ- (to be awake, aware). Cognate with Sanskrit बोधयति (bodháyati).
