chicotte (plural chicottes)

1. A long knotted whip with a wooden handle, formerly used as a punishment in the Congo and Portuguese Africa.
   • 1928, Daily Express, 28 November:

     Corporal punishment, or ‘chicotte’, now exists only in the Congo army.

   • 1998, Adam Hochschild, King Leopold's Ghost, Pan 2012, p. 120:

     Usually the chicotte was applied to the victim's bare buttocks.

From Portuguese chicote, probably borrowed from French chicot.
