démanger

French

Etymology

From dé- + manger.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /de.mɑ̃.ʒe/
  • (file)

Verb

démanger

  1. (transitive) to itch, to cause to feel itchy
Vos doigts vous démangent.Your fingers itch.
    Synonym: gratter
  2. (transitive, figuratively) to cause to have the desire to, to cause to itch for action
L'envie d'avoir un bébé me démange.I really want to have a baby.

Conjugation

This is a regular -er verb, but the stem is written démange- before endings that begin with -a- or -o- (to indicate that the -g- is a "soft" /ʒ/ and not a "hard" /ɡ/). This spelling-change occurs in all verbs in -ger, such as neiger and manger.
