Etymology

From Old Anatolian Turkish [script needed] (danışmaq)[1], ultimately a derivation of Proto-Turkic *tạnu- (to know, get to know) [2][3], whence also Azerbaijani tanımaq. Cognate with Karakhanid تَنُشْماقْ (tanušmāq, to talk to each other), Ottoman Turkish طانشمق (danışmak, to advice, counsel).
