destrăbăla

Romanian

Etymology

Unknown origin. Possibly a relatively modern word due to the presence of the intervocalic 'b' and lack of attestation in older texts, perhaps borrowed from Italian (s)traballare. Other theories include a Vulgar Latin root *disterebellāre, or from a derivative of *traballāre, but both are unlikely. Has also been noted in a rare regional form străbăla. [1]

Verb

a destrăbăla (third-person singular present destrăbălează, past participle destrăbălat) 1st conj.

  1. (reflexive) to go astray, become corrupted, depraved, perverted, full of vice, etc.
