From New Latin strabismus, from Ancient Greek στραβισμός (strabismós, “(action of) squinting”), from στραβίζω (strabízō, “to squint”), from στραβός (strabós, “squinting, squint-eyed”) (whence the synonymous Latin strabus), possibly from Proto-Indo-European *strebʰ-, whence Ancient Greek στρέφω (stréphō, “to twist”) and στρεβλός (streblós, “twisted”).
