filgħodu
Maltese
Alternative forms
- fil-għodu (deprecated)
Etymology
From Arabic فِي الْغُدُوِّ (fī l-ḡuduwwi), from غُدُوّ (ḡuduww, “morning time”). The għ behaves like a virtual consonant, preventing the contraction *fl-għodu, *flgħodu. Outside of idioms, such use is still possible, but rare.
Pronunciation
- IPA(key): /fɪˈlɔːdʊ/
