From Old Anatolian Turkish [script needed] (yipek). Probably a derivation of Proto-Turkic *yip (thread). Cognate with Turkish ipek, Turkmen ýüpek, Uzbek ipak, Kazakh жібек (jibek), Kyrgyz жибек (cibek).
