From Dutch catacombe, from French catacombe, from Late Latin catacumbas, name of the underground cemetery of St. Sebastian in Rome, dissimilation of cata- (“among”) + tumbas, from Ancient Greek κατά (katá, “under”) + τύμβος (túmbos, “swell”).
