1. college, academy, university, polytechnic (learning institution)

• Originally korkeakoulu was used of university-level specialized learning institutions such as business schools (kauppakorkeakoulu), technical universities (teknillinen korkeakoulu), military academy (sotakorkeakoulu), some of which still have it in their names. Today the term is understood to include both yliopisto (“university”) and ammattikorkeakoulu (“polytechnic”) levels of education.
