From Proto-Baltic *mel(n)- (“black, blue”), from Proto-Indo-European *mel- (“dark, red, dirty”). Cognates include Latvian melns (“black”) and Old Prussian melne (“bruise”). Probably akin to Proto-Slavic *malina (“raspberry”)
