From Arabic مِسْكِين (miskīn, poor), from Classical Syriac ܡܶܣܟܸܐܢܳܐ / ܡܶܣܟܸܢܳܐ / ܡܶܣܟܸܝܢܳܐ (meskēnā, miserable, wretched), from Akkadian 𒈦𒆕 (muškēnu, beggar, needy, indigent).
