Catalan
Alternative forms
- net (2016 spelling reform)
Etymology
Derived in masculine from the feminine néta, from Late Latin nepta, from Latin neptis (“granddaughter”). Compare Portuguese neto and Spanish nieto.
Usage notes
The spelling nét was deprecated in the 2016 spelling reform. The old spelling can still be used for metalinguistic transcriptions, or when the intended meaning is not clear from the context. See Appendix:Catalan orthography.
