Etymology

Disputed. Seemingly cognate with Latin ostendō (to show), maintaining the literal sense of obs- (foreward) + tendō (stretch).[1][2] By some connected with Proto-Italic *tolnō, hence a formation parallel to Latin offerō (to offer), perfect stem obtul-.[2][3]

Verb

*ostenom (transitive)

  1. to offer; (alternatively) to show
