Compound of peri (word, literally about, around) + bahasa (language), from Malay peribahasa, from Sanskrit, either परिभाषा (paribhāṣā, definition) or परिभासते (paribhāsate, look like) as compound of परि (pari) + भाश् (bhāś). Cognate of Balinese ᬧᬭᬶᬩᬲ (paribasa), Madurese parèbhâsa.
