From Proto-Slavic *pъtica, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *put-, from Proto-Indo-European *peth₂- (“to fly”). Cognate with English feather, pen, Ancient Greek πέτομαι (pétomai), πτέρυξ (ptérux) (whence pterodactyl, archæopteryx, Greek φτερό (fteró), πτηνό (ptinó)), Latin petō.
