Possibly from Arabic رَزَحَ‎ (razaḥa, “to be exhausted, emaciated, to sink to the ground”). The Arabic verb was used especially of overstrained mounts or beasts of burden, thus perhaps from a tottering or quivering motion, which was transferred to shivering. Compare Maltese trieżaħ (“to shiver in the cold”).
