From Proto-Finnic *repäinen, from Proto-Finno-Ugric *repä, likely a loan from Proto-Indo-Iranian *reupōśo-. Compare Persian روباه (rubâh, fox) and Avestan 𐬎𐬭𐬎𐬞𐬌 (urupi, certain breed of dog). Cognate of Finnish repo and Veps reboi. See also rebu.
