rejjaq

Maltese

Root
r-j-q

Etymology

Perhaps derived from riq (saliva), from Arabic رِيق (rīq), in the sense of “to make someone’s mouth water”. But compare also رَوَّقَ (rawwaqa, to pour drink) and especially North Levantine Arabic تروق (trawwaʔ, to breakfast), which corresponds to the Maltese mediopassive trejjaq (to eat, satisfy one’s appetite).

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ˈrɛj.jaʔ/

Verb

rejjaq (imperfect jrejjaq, past participle mrejjaq)

  1. to feed
    Synonym: tema' (commoner)
