From Proto-Sino-Tibetan know. Cognate with Burmese သိ (si., know), Tibetan ཤེས་པ (shes pa, know), Sichuan Yi (syp, know), Lisu know (sel/sɤ́/) and Tangut 𗓂 (/*sjɨ²/, know). Compare Zaiwa se and Longchuan Achang ɕɛ³¹.
