Calque of Japanese 高等 (kōtō, higher) + 中学校 (chūgakkō, secondary (middle) school) as sekolah menengah (high school (US), secondary school (UK)) + tinggi (high). The post-war Japanese term is 高等学校 (kōtōgakkō).
