Etymology

From Proto-Albanian *stara, from Proto-Indo-European *sth₂-ró-s, from Proto-Indo-European *steh₂-. Compare Russian ста́рый (stáryj, old), Old Church Slavonic старъ (starŭ, old), English stour, Lithuanian stóras, Pashto ستر (stër, large), Sanskrit स्थिर (sthira). Ultimately a doublet of shtazë through its derivation from the participle *shtan.

according to Meyer, it derives from Latin extra, and a cognate with romanian Romanian stră-. Joseph however disagrees with this link, as it derives from older shtër- compares Albanian stër- with latin tritavis (older form strittauus), and claims it as a descendent of the original Latin stri-, incfluences from greek επι- or italian stra-[1].
