Etymology
Orel derives it from Proto-Slavic *stъrviti (“to bait, to lure, to train”); compare Bulgarian стръвя (strǎvja) < стръв (strǎv, “bait”).[1] Topalli instead considers it a prefixed form of vit (“year”), initially used for livestock that take up certain tasks once they reach one year of age.[2]
