Borrowed from Malay sembelih (butcher an animal), from a metathesis of Arabic بِاسْمِ اللّٰه (bismi llāh, in the name of God). Compare Maranao sombali' (chant before butchering), Tausug sumbayꞌ (slaughter for eating), and Malagasy sombily (slaughter).
