Etymology

Borrowed from Malay sembelih (“butcher an animal”), from a metathesis of Arabic بِاسْمِ اللّٰه‎ (bismi llāh, “in the name of God”). Compare Maranao sombali' (“chant before butchering”), Tausug sumbayꞌ (“slaughter for eating”), and Malagasy sombily (“slaughter”).
