tajn
Maltese
Etymology
From Arabic طِين (ṭīn). The diphthong is irregular. Anomalies between diphthongs and high monophthongs occur more often in Maltese; in this case it might have been reinforced by the desire to avoid homophony with tin (“figs”), from Arabic تِين (tīn).
Pronunciation
- IPA(key): /tajn/
