themel

Albanian

Etymology

Unknown, could be an ancient substrate word; compare Sumerian 𒋼 (temen) and Akkadian 𒋼 (temennu), both meaning 'foundation', or Etruscan 𐌈𐌄𐌌𐌉𐌀𐌔𐌄 (θemiase, foundation), from 𐌈𐌄𐌌- (θem-, to make foundations, build).[1] If Indo-European, possibly from Proto-Indo-European *dʰéǵʰōm, although problematic (cf. Serbo-Croatian zemlja (earth, soil)). Otherwise from Ancient Greek θεμέλιος (themélios).
