Etymology
Seemingly from Arabic واعَدَ (wāʿada, “to make an agreement with”, especially “to set a meeting”), but with the sense of related وَعَدَ (waʿada, “to promise”) and perhaps an independent alteration of the latter. In dialectal Arabic, a second stem وَعَّدَ (waʿʿada) is also widely used.
Pronunciation
- IPA(key): /ˈwɪːjɛt/
