Inherited from Proto-Slavic *ogňь, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *ugnis, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁n̥gʷnis. Cognates include Lithuanian ugnis, Sanskrit अग्नि (agní) and Hittite 𒀀𒀝𒉌𒅖 (akniš, “name of a deity”), and Latin ignis (whence English ignition and igneous).
